Do I need a key or token?
No, the open Hacker News Algolia API works without registration.
How are mentions counted?
Exact-keyword search (case-insensitive) over new posts. A "new_mentions" event fires when the count grows since the last check.
Are comments included?
Story posts are tracked; comment threads are on the roadmap.
Free vs Pro?
The limit (30 vs 3000 keywords) and Pro features: schedule, Telegram alerts, charts, XLSX/JSON. One key works on 3 computers.
Installation & uninstall
Free version
- Download the app with the «Download free» button above and unpack the zip.
- Run HNMentionWatch.exe — no installation needed.
- Works right away: add a keyword or phrase and run the first check.
Pro version
- After payment you get a license key.
- Click "Activate Pro" in the app and paste the key - Pro unlocks on up to 3 Windows computers for 12 months.
Uninstall
- Delete the app folder - no traces left in the system.
Desktop apps leave no traces: delete the folder and it is gone.
